Newport Activities, The Chanler at Cliff Walk

The Chanler is the perfect base from which to explore the best and brightest of Newport.  This two-story, Georgian-style mansion of serene beauty and elegance on Memorial Boulevard is just steps away from all the finest attractions in this historic seaside town.

For the Jogger or Walker

The Chanler is situated at the start of Newport’s famed Cliff Walk, the 3.5-mile National Recreation Trail running along the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean past many of Newport’s famed “summer cottages.”  It provides a grand perspective from the ocean side of these magnificent historic homes.

For the Culture Enthusiast

Newport is famous for its incredible mansions — or “summer cottages” as they were called — and the Preservation Society of Newport maintains them with loving care.  Don’t miss the Astors’ Beechwood Mansion and Victorian Living History Museum, an 1857 “cottage” owned by William Backhouse Astor and his wife Caroline.  Here actors dressed in period costume will provide a tour of the mansion -- and century-old backstairs gossip.  For true history buffs, the Museum of Newport History features decorative arts, historical artifacts, and photographs.  Other famed mansions in Newport include The Breakers, Rose Cliff (site of the movie “The Great Gatsby), The Elms, Marble House, and Château-sur-Mer

For The Tennis Aficionado

Located at the 1881 site of the first U.S. National Championships is the International Tennis Hall of Fame Museum.  Take in fascinating exhibits and a video presentation on the history of the game.

For The Water Lover

Seventy exhibits and 14 galleries of fresh and saltwater animals will delight any aquatic enthusiast at The Newport Aquarium.  For those who want to feel the wind in their hair, Newport Sailing Tours explores beautiful Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay daily from May to October.

For The Rail Addict

For excellent views over Narragansett Bay, board a historic train that wends its way from the west shore of Aquidneck Island on a 90-minute journey offered by The Old Colony and Newport Railway.

For The Shopping Queen or King

Bowen's Wharf is sure to attract the most discerning collector with unique gifts, hand crafted artistry, fine clothing, jewelry, and home furnishings.  Centrally located on Newport's historic waterfront, shoppers will love exploring more than 20 retail shops for the perfect souvenir of their visit to Newport.

For The Music Lover

Trinity Church, home to a 1733 pipe organ once played by George Frederic Handel, hosts concert performances during the summer months.  Another place to enjoy great views of Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay is Fort Adams State Park, where, during the annual summer concerts, visitors can enjoy jazz, folk, and blues.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk is a member of Grand Heritage Hotels International, a premier owner-operator of independent luxury hotels and resorts.
