Take A Walk On The "Elegant" Side 20 Rooms...20 Masterpieces The Chanler at Cliff Walk was an interior designer’s dream. Each of the mansion’s 20 rooms had its own distinctive design from its molding to the layout of the space and therefore became a blank canvas upon which interior designer Jeanie Shufelt could paint a masterpiece. Envision a maze of different rooms of a grand mansion where you could create 20 versions of one masterpiece. Behold, The Chanler was born! Mrs. Jeanie Shufelt gave each room its own design to reflect historical periods of our great nation. Design influences over the course of 200 years provided a base for design elements today. She scoured antique stores, flea markets, and even junk shops to unearth furniture, artwork, and decorative pieces that would emphasize her vision. Powerful marble fireplaces that were found in Michigan became a strong focal point of each room. Below are descriptions of each providing a glimpse into The Chanler’s most alluring accommodations depicting cherished designs that define America. The Block Island Ocean Villa: the centerpiece of this accommodation is a private shuttered courtyard with fountain, sauna, and outdoor spa. Fashioned after the famous island for which it is named, this villa focuses on natural beauty, ocean views, and rural country style. It is decorated with a unique toile de jouy of amber and washed greens, which depicts hunting dogs running free in golden fields. The Colonial bead-board ceiling and wainscoting evoke a cottage-like feeling. The queen-sized sleigh bed of antique pine is enveloped in a half-canopy of toile, which is lined with a coordinating print. Furnishings include an antique Hitchcock desk and two chairs. The ample bath has a sink built into a lovely oak chest, a Jacuzzi, and an oversized shower with trompe l'oeil mural that depicts a beach scene as seen through a window. The Briar Rose Garden Villa: one of the most appealing aspects of this room is the oversized courtyard with a stone sitting deck and its own private veranda and outdoor spa. The cozy room is decorated in floral damask in teal and pink with cabbage roses. The antique French headboard is cane with roses carved into it. The bed is nestled between two shear-covered windows and is draped with floral fabric. The bath features Briar Rose painted fixtures and hand-painted Briar Rose tiles to enhance the villa's theme and garden feeling. The Colonial Room: this is one of two mansion rooms located on the first floor that is handicap-accessible. It features its own private deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and expansive lawn area and gardens. The room's personality is characteristic of the styles prevalent in the 13 original British colonies and has a magnificent four-poster, queen-sized iron canopy bed, a four-foot barrier-free shower with multiple showerheads and body jets, antique wide-planked pine floors, and beautiful colonial chandeliers of bronze and tin. The room's centerpiece is the antique fireplace with an ornamental mantel, and above are hand-painted tiles from the 18th century. The Empire Room: this junior suite is divided into two areas: a sitting room and a bedroom. On one side is the sitting area, and, under its own alcove, is a large Jacuzzi tub. The bedroom side of the room enjoys an ocean view from a large window. The large, queen-sized sleigh bed is placed at an angle and faces the focal point of the room, the unusual and beautiful antique slate mantel, with built-in TV above it, and inlaid cameo tiles in colors that complement the room. The room has a warm-toned carpet of red, green, and gold. The window and door are decorated with hand-painted decorations and medallions. The impressive sleigh bed is draped with fine red, green, and gold iridescent silk, and the huge bath includes an oversized triple shower, private toilet, and bidet room — all done in gold-colored granite. The English Trellis Garden Villa: this villa takes its name from the fixtures used to decorate the sumptuous marbled bath, which includes a large two-person corner Jacuzzi and hand-painted tile work. The room has two queen-sized, full-canopied iron beds and features a large walkout deck with a view of the ocean. Trellises are used outdoors and indoors to continue the garden theme. The English Tudor Room: this junior suite boasts beautifully carved woodwork with traditional linen-fold oak panels and handcrafted stucco walls. The huge four-poster leather king bed sits upon a platformed floor of antique wide-planked oak and under a carved ceiling attached cornice. The room is divided into a sitting area complete with a couch and overstuffed chair facing the oak paneled wall with built-in television and antique Tudor style fireplace. The in-room, six-foot Jacuzzi tub is enclosed in oak cabinetry featuring Tudor style grates. The step-down bathroom is decorated in rich Emperador dark brown marble and includes a large shower and built-in marble vanity and makeup table. The Federal Room: takes its decor from the patriotic period in American history after the Revolutionary War, when Europe was under the rule of Napoleon. Characteristic of this period was the use of medallions, eagle motifs, the Napoleonic bee, and deep reds, blues, and golds. The room has a queen-sized iron bed with swagged full canopy in rich blue and red striped damask. The fireplace, with its Federal-styled pictorial tile reflects colonial tradespeople and is flanked with niches of ornately carved plaster shells. Its ocean-side window and door, each adorned with swags and jabots, overlook the Atlantic Ocean and Easton's Beach. The room has a glass-enclosed spacious rooftop sun deck where guests can lounge or even entertain while receiving room service. The private marble bath includes a beautiful commode and built-in sink, double Jacuzzi, full separate shower, and private toilet area. The bathroom is oversized and decorated in documented historic period wall covering. The French Provincial: typical of the French countryside, this is a two-level room. The bathroom, which is highlighted by hand-hewn blue tiles, an exquisite hand-painted pedestal sink, an oversized separate shower and large Jacuzzi tub overlooking the ocean, is entered from the foyer below. The bedroom is three steps up and features slanted 12-foot-high ceilings, a gas stove, and a beautifully carved provincial queen-sized bed. The cozy, nest-like room has an ocean view and is decorated in navy and white with a floral carpet, complementary drapery and bed hanging fabrics, two comfortable chairs, and a small desk. The Georgian Room: a green-medallioned marble foyer welcomes guests into the Georgian Room, which offers spectacular views from its bay window overlooking the ocean. The "California" king-sized, low-poster bed is decorated with a half tester with bed hangings in a yellow and sage Georgian, floral, damask print. Two damask-covered wing chairs in the bayed sitting area are set in front of the beautiful Georgian-inspired fireplace, highlighted by a bolection molding, gilded mirrors, and hand-painted armoire with classical motif. A fabulous crystal chandelier hangs over the bed, while brass and crystal hurricane lamps adorn the mantel. The bath has hand-glazed tiles featuring a carved border and a triangular Jacuzzi tub surrounded by a wood-paneled deck separated from the shower by a glass window and a skylight. The Gothic: an oversized junior suite with vaulted ceilings inspired by medieval Europe. The fabrics, in deep purple, gold, and green, along with stone-patterned wall covering, help achieve the look one might expect when entering a king's castle. The huge room has a sitting area, complete with a couch and chairs in front of the impressive stone mantle, over which hangs an original oil painting of a knight and maiden. An imposing, Gothic-arched, king-sized wrought iron bed with sheer canopy is the centerpiece of the room, along with an in-room, enclosed double Jacuzzi tub decorated with pointed Gothic arches reminiscent of a medieval carriage. A step-down private bath includes a large skylight and black bath fixtures to complement the purple marbled shower. The Greek Revival: at the top of the stairs on the second floor is the Greek Revival Room, featuring rich clay, gold, and ochre colors. Greek dentil molding and a swag border complete with a traditional torch design surround the walls of the ocean-view room. The queen-sized bed of antique bird's eye maple also features the torch design and is decorated with a half tester in a black and gold novelty print. The room features a walkout deck overlooking the gardens and the Atlantic Ocean and a double window overlooking the front lawn and gardens. A private bath, done in limestone tiles, features a unique shower experience with its rain shower and multiple showerhead design as well as a tumbled marble border tile. The classical motif is complemented by the lines of the corner fireplace, with carved over-mantel, as well as the carved woodwork details of the wet bar and closet. The Louis XVI: this room continues the neoclassical lines from the French perspective and features hand-painted leaf and ribbon designs copied from a chateau in Normandy, stunning crystal chandeliers, and a draped, king-sized bed, with hand-painted gold-leafed finish, wrapped in voluminous aqua brocade drapes hung from a ceiling-mounted cornice. Window decor includes hand-painted cornice treatments in the sitting area that overlooks the ocean and lawns. A large walkout deck provides an outdoor private lounging area to take in the spectacular views. The vanilla-colored marbled bath boasts a double Jacuzzi, large shower with multiple showerheads and body jets, pedestal sink, and crystal chandelier. The room features four antique chandeliers and a small antique writing desk dating from the 19th century. Martha’s Vineyard Villa: this is the most romantic and glamorous villa and can serve as a bridal suite, decorated in various blues, creams, and tans. The large tumbled-marble bathroom boasts a sunken wet room with Jacuzzi and an open shower with a hand-painted tile trompe l'oeil mural of an ocean scene and antique stained glass skylight. A huge, full-canopied four-poster king bed decorated with blue damask fabric highlights the bedroom, which also features a stylish vanity with makeup lights. Hung from the high-beamed ceiling, a beautiful crystal chandelier adorns the center of the room where two upholstered chairs sit facing the fireplace, with antique hand-painted tiles surrounding it, and a large built-in television. Outside, the private outdoor deck with steps down to the courtyard features a raised "crow's nest" seating area overlooking the ocean and Easton's Beach. The Mediterranean: is a two-room suite with classic stuccoed walls where guests enter through an arched foyer into the sitting area. The room features panoramic views of the ocean from each of its five windows. Bright reds, yellows, and greens are used throughout the room that also features an overstuffed couch and three comfortable chairs, a Mediterranean carved wood chandelier, and a hooded fireplace with hammered copper surrounded by hand-molded limestone tiles. Both the sitting room and the bedroom have their own televisions. The elegant iron bed is draped with a corona hung from the 11-foot high ceiling. The oversized bathroom features dijon and rust tiles, a six-foot double Jacuzzi tub, and a windowed shower with a beautiful tiled nymph set into its wall. The Nantucket Ocean Villa: is decorated in antique pine and complemented by nautical pieces evocative of its namesake whaling town. The room features a traditional feather bed, a wide-planked, antique pumpkin-toned wood floor, a tongue and groove wood-paneled ceiling, and hand-milled fireplace. The ocean theme continues with the mural of a Nantucket harbor scene in the bathroom area surrounding the double Jacuzzi tub. The bath has a beautifully tiled oversized shower, and even the bath fixtures are decorated with sailboats to emphasize this style. As was often done in the well-to-do homes in Nantucket, a toile de jouy in a blue and cream Oriental print adorns the bed and windows. A comfortable wing chair sits in a corner overlooking the deck and ocean. Peonies and Ivy Garden Villa: the garden theme continues with a paneled queen bed with hand-painted trim, painted furniture, and pine-paneled and papered walls and ceiling. The bed is hung with a sheer fabric bordered with lace over the headboard. The tile and marble bathroom is decorated with peonies and ivy design fixtures and includes a Jacuzzi and large shower. The room also includes an oversized deck with a lounge area and cozy bar-top table overlooking the ocean. The Regency Room: located on the first floor, has a private deck looking out over the ocean, Easton's Beach, and the hotel’s expansive lawn. Its personality is very formal, with furnishings reminiscent of French and English royalty with rich, regal colors of crimson and gold. The room features a carved ceiling, an elegant king-sized bed crowned with a gilded corona from which beautiful silk curtains hang, a marble bathroom with a door-less shower with arched entrance and multiple showerheads and body jets, plus a double Jacuzzi tub. Molding details in the room follow the dictates of restrained styles with much use of reeding. Use of Egyptian motifs like the sphinx and other animals, as well as chinoiserie, japanned furniture and bronzed or gilded appliqués, is reflected in the room’s elaborate fireplace wall and antique furnishings. The Renaissance Room: also designated as one of the "bridal suites," it is one of the largest and most popular rooms in the hotel. It has a spectacular marbled bath complete with sunken tub surrounded by columns and features a screen that depicts a scene from ancient Rome. A huge walk-in shower, private toilet, and bidet room complete the oversized bathroom. The bedroom, surrounded by tall windows overlooking the private rooftop deck, has decidedly French details, with ornately paneled walls as well as a carved ceiling treatment. The vibrant colors of turquoise and gold are used throughout to adorn the four swagged windows and antique-white, four-poster king bed. The room has three TVs, one of which is in the bathroom, as well as its own sitting area with gold brocade plump chairs surrounding an elegant antique carved fireplace. The room has three crystal chandeliers, an antique walnut hand-laid floor, pedestal table, and antique oriental rug of gold and turquoise, accented with pink. The Victorian Room: features a queen-sized antique Victorian bed, huge bathroom with antique stained glass, pedestal sink, separate large shower, and double Jacuzzi from which the expansive front lawn and entrance can be viewed through a large double window. The room reflects a 19th-century style of furniture, during the reign of Queen Victoria of England, with a co-mingling of patterns adorning the upholstery, walls, floor, and ceiling. The room boasts a small sitting area complete with antique furnishings, some from the old "Cliff Walk Manor" hotel, including two antique Victorian couches, chair, and marble topped tables. The room has three antique Victorian-beaded chandeliers. Colors are soft tones of pink, beige, and gold with ebony stained woodwork. Windows are adorned with rich brocade, tasseled valances, and overlook the gardens in front of the mansion and, on the other side, the lawn and Atlantic Ocean. The Williamsburg Room: features a style stemming from post-Revolutionary America. Its decor is reminiscent of that of the grander homes in Virginia, like Washington's Mount Vernon. Furnishings include a Chinese Chippendale queen four-poster bed with bed hangings in a Colonial Williamsburg floral print of red, white, and blue. The beautiful blue porcelain-tiled bath includes a Queen Anne vanity and seven-foot shower with multiple showerheads and body sprays. A glass-enclosed sunroom with Jacuzzi, where guests can relax and bathe in complete privacy, offers an ocean view. The antique fireplace boasts delft windmill tiles from Holland.
