Dew Drop Morgan:
A Living Legend at Lake Placid Lodge
Lake Placid Lodge has its
origins in an historic Adirondack lodge dating back to 1882, so perhaps it
should be no surprise that among its senior staff members is a living bit of
history. Forrest “Dew Drop” Morgan is a legendary character, beloved by locals
and visitors from afar. Lake Placid Lodge is lucky enough to have him charming
guests with his endless font of Adirondack lore, sporting knowledge, and
American history – originally as bartender, and now, as ambassador-at-large and
beloved raconteur. For many years, Dew Drop served up his world-famous Bloody
Marys [secret recipe] and “bloody good Martinis” [according to Faye Dunaway, who
worked for him in a previous stage of her career]. His specialty now is a warm
welcome.
The
name “Dew Drop” was bestowed unwittingly, but with permanent results, by a
chance remark that the sprightly young Morgan was “fresh as a dew drop.” A
bombardier in World War II and the Korean War, he was twice shot down behind
enemy lines – the second time, rescued by the Russians. Dew Drop’s bride made
her wedding dress from the parachute that saved him the first time.
A
bobsled champion, Dew Drop went on to coach the U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team from
1946-1960. His thirteen children all inherited his enthusiasm for the sport,
including John Morgan who played himself as a bobsled commentator in Cool
Runnings, the movie about the Jamaican bobsled team.
The congenial host once had
a bar in Lake Placid called the Thirteen Morgans, and another in Saranac Lake
called The Dew Drop Inn; at one time he owned a total of three inns in the
Adirondack region. It was at The Dew Drop Inn that he earned his second
nickname, “The Yankee Dipper.” Every time the Yankees lost a game – which was
often – Dew Drop would ceremoniously jump into the river behind the bar,
regardless of the weather. His luck at poker is right on par with his baseball
fortune, but he gets full credit for launching the popular Monday Night Football
Pools at Lake Placid Lodge.
So come meet a living legend.
