Imagine a cozy hilltop haven, nestled in the woods. A place to retreat and refresh after a grueling tennis match on the nearby courts, or relax and catch your breath at the end of a hike through the miles and miles of surrounding mountain trails. Nothing fancy, nothing formal, just the blissful luxury of a welcome, well-situated stopping place created simply to offer rest. “Camp David” is the latest addition to The Point, the award-winning Relais & Chateaux resort on Upper Saranac Lake, already widely noted for its breathtaking beauty and exceptional service. Formerly a “Great Camp” of the Rockefeller family, The Point has been resurrected to its original glory by The Garrett Hotel Group. In November 2001, it ranked #2 on Condé Nast Traveler’s worldwide “Best of the Best” list, and #1 among “Best Small U.S. Hotels” in the same issue; it has also been consistently rated top resort in the country by the Zagat Guide to Top U.S. Resorts for the past five years; and Wine Spectator recently named it “Best Resort for Wine Lovers.” “Camp David” is named for David Garrett, co-founder of The Garrett Group, and current president of Relais & Chateaux and Relais Gourmands of North America. The rustic one-room cabin is modeled after a traditional Adirondack hunting lodge, with broad windows commanding a 360-degree view from the hilltop, a deep porch outfitted with sturdy Adirondack chairs, and comfortable, masculine armchairs furnishing the interior. It is constructed entirely of local materials, such as pine log beams, pine bark shingles, and fieldstones for the large working fireplace. A cast iron wood stove adds to the warmth of the shelter in the fall and winter months, filling the lodge with the evocative aroma of old-fashioned camp kitchens. Camp David is not intended for overnight accommodations, and although there are no bathroom facilities, there is a full bar, and guests will be welcome to picnic in the inviting space. The Point itself has always been the perfect way to escape into The Great Outdoors without sacrificing any accustomed comfort. The addition of Camp David now brings guests one step deeper into the woods. The Point, Lake Placid Lodge and The Inn of The Five Graces, all operated by The Garrett Hotel Group, are members of Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious international association of privately owned hotels and restaurants embodying the highest culinary standards and the French “art de vivre.” |
